Cities are essential for children’s healthy development. Recognizing this, Gehl partnered with Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority to develop public spaces and policies that are child- and family-friendly. The team designed urban strategies, reviewed planning policies, and developed urban interventions for a family-friendly Emirate.

Piloting behavioral change for a family-friendly Emirate

Design shapes how people interact with and experience public spaces — directly impacting their quality of life. From something as simple as a bench to a purposeful public program, every design element plays a role in influencing positive behavior change. These subtle but powerful choices determine whether people linger and engage or simply pass through — showcasing how thoughtful design fosters vibrant, healthy, and enduring urban environments.

In Al Falah’s village center, Gehl piloted 17 play interventions to observe how children and their caregivers interacted with the space. From hammocks to picnic tables to sports equipment and public programming focused on the early childhood development, the pilot demonstrated how design choices encourage social interaction, imaginative play, and increased visits.

Gehl’s observations and data collection showed a 300% increase in children’s engagement, a 97% rise in play activity, and a 42% drop in electronic device use. It demonstrated how simple yet intentional urban interventions can significantly enhance quality of urban life for children — support their motor skills, physical and cognitive health, and social inclusion. These findings have informed future design and programming decisions for Abu Dhabi.
